Brides Amy and Leigh came all the way to Massachusetts with 50 of their friends and family for their gay wedding. As residents of St. Croix USVI and Tampa, FL, they wanted to marry somewhere it was legal and support the economy of a state that supports their right for marriage equality. They hired wedding planner Bernadette Smith of 14 Stories (which specializes in same-sex weddings) to bring their vision to life.
Their vision was to create a mystical, almost dream-like experience for their guests using a great deal of candlelight and rustic floral elements. They chose Thompson Island for their wedding venue because they live part-time on an island and found Thompson to evoke the vibe they sought to create. The brides and guests arrived via sailboat – the Tall Ship Formidable – precisely at twilight. Flowers and candlelight provided by Spruce Floral and Boston Uplights, flanked the 100’ dock. A bagpiper played as the processional traveled down the dock and continued to the ceremony space. The darkness was pierced by hanging candles on over 20 trees, including the tree on the hill under which they would marry.
Dinner catered by Above and Beyond Catering was inspired by their favorite restaurant on St. Thomas. Above and Beyond also provided the cake. The “Hollow” – an event space on Thompson Island – was filled with flowers and hanging candles provided by Spruce Floral and Boston Uplights. The entertainment was provided by harpist Aine Minogue and her trio.
