Today is Rustic Monday! So, What IS Rustic?

Today is Rustic Monday on my Kate Parker Wedding.  Since it is our first ever Rustic Monday, we thought it would be a good idea to give examples of what “rustic” actually is.  Many weddings have rustic aspects mixed in with a vintage styled wedding.  We decided to show some rustic elements of weddings, like a wedding gown, table scape, and wedding decor in order to sort of define what rustic is.  We hope you enjoy our first of many Rustic Mondays!

Rustic Wedding Gown and Rustic Bouquet:

Rustic Monday

Above and Below Vendors Involved: NYC/Westchester County wedding photographerDove Photography

Why is this rustic? Sunflowers are wildflowers, which gives them a very organic and natural look.  The gown in the photographs has an empire waist with lace embroidery giving it a rustic look.

Rustic Monday

Rustic Wedding Ceremony:

Vendors Involved:  New Hampshire wedding photographer, Melissa Koren Photography

Why is this rustic?  I think “barn” simply does it.  Barns are exactly what what comes to my mind when I hear “rustic wedding”.

The aged wood and the outdoor location are a natural look for a wedding ceremony.

Rustic Wedding Reception Venue:

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding photographerCarla Ten Eyck Photography

Why is this rustic?  The wooden floors and walls make for a very rustic style. Using paper lanterns above instead of chandeliers gives a dim and more natural lighting to the space.

Rustic Wedding Cuisine:

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding caterer, La Cuisine

Why is this rustic?  This caterer chose to cook in large metal woks on open heat which gives the cuisine an organic twist.

Vendors Involved: Massachusetts wedding photographer, Relive Photography

Why is this rustic?  The wooden serving board is a creative way to add a natural feel to your hors d’oeuvres.

Rustic Wedding Paper Products:

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding photographer, Carla Ten Eyck Photography

Why is this rustic?  Creating home-made place cards are a great way to get a rustic look.  The color scheme, wildflower patterns, and handwriting all comes together to make for rustic place cards.

Vendors Involved: Chicago, Connecticut, NYC, Rhode Island, Savannah, Vermont, and Washington D.C. wedding paper products, Tulaloo Stationery Studio

Why is this rustic?  The twigs and twine really give these programs a natural, rustic look.

Rustic Wedding Table Scape:

14 stories

Vendors Involved: Bernadette Smith of 14 Stories

Why is this rustic? The tree stump centerpieces with floral tops gives an outdoor feel to this reception.  The hanging lights and wooden beams are very rustic as well.

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Maine wedding planner, Maine Seasons Events; Maine wedding photographer, Brea McDonald Photography; Maine wedding paper products, Griffin-vites Stationery

Why is this rustic?  The knit menu holder gives the table setting a home-made feel.  The color scheme is also a great way to get an outdoor feel for an indoor reception.

The candle lit table and green colors all help to tie this rustic table scape together.

Rustic Wedding Decor/Accessories:

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding plannerSixpence for your Shoe and Troy Photography

Why is this rustic?  The hay, used as a hanging spot for the place cards, gives this wedding a very rustic look.

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding photographerCarla Ten Eyck Photography

Why is this rustic?  The worn down wooden sign is a great way to direct guests to the wedding site and give guests a sneak peak at the rustic styled wedding.

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding photographer, Carla Ten Eyck Photography

Why is this rustic?  The background for this decor is very barn-like.  The photographs are hung by a natural green colored ribbon and the brown frames tied together are very rustic elements.

Rustic Wedding Cake:

Vendors Involved: Maine and New Hampshire wedding cakesWild Orchid Baking Company

Why is this rustic?  The birch bark styled fondant gives this cake a woodsy feel.  The leaves strewn about also help make this cake look rustic.

Number of years in business:

I officially launched my Etsy shop full of handmade cards mostly, in 2007.  By the time I got a personal website my business had evolved into wedding stationery sort of seamlessly.  After leaving a 9-5 job in corporate real estate Mew Paper Arts became a full time operation in June of 2008.

Pricing Information:

All of my wedding paper suites are handmade and include the invitation, response card with printed envelope and single mailing envelope printed with return address.  A starting point for a basic set will be about $600 per hundred for flat, digital printing.  Prices increase with the amount of customizing a couple is looking for, and using specialty printing techniques such as letterpress, engraving, foil stamping or die cutting.  The possibilities for unique and personal wedding stationery are really limitless!

Vendor Spotlight, Mew Paper Arts

What makes you stand out?:

I do the best I can to provide clients a truly personal experience that can be hard to find when shopping for wedding invitations online.  Clients who choose to visit me in the studio get very involved in the design process—we’ll sit at the computer together and play with fonts, colors, layout etc. until their unique vision is achieved.  My studio is in my home, so I try to create a very welcoming experience.  And even when designing from a distance, the process is just as hands-on, because I provide samples of paper, envelopes, ribbon and other embellishments so that there are no surprises when your order arrives.  Clients are a part of everything from concept to print.

Vendor Spotlight, Mew Paper Arts

What’s the favorite part of your work?:

I never get tired of being part of people’s weddings.  Most people view stationery and the invitation as the first glimpse of what’s to come—I love being able to bring a couple’s vision to life for them and set the stage for what will be the most memorable occasion of their life.

If you have any spare time, how do you spend it?:

As a small business owner, spare time can be hard to come by.  But I make weekends a priority and love spending time with my husband Darryl.  I fancy myself quite a good cook and love trying new recipes at home, and discovering great restaurants in our area.  I love to daydream about tropical vacations, practice yoga and ride my super-rad scooter all over my little town!

Which charity(s) are you donating to and why?:

Cooper, my cat and love of my life inspired me initially to support the ASPCA—the joy I get out of having him for a pet is immeasurable.  But I decided to support all three foundations, because I believe that charity in all its form is a valuable way of contributing to a community.  I lead a very blessed life, doing a job that I love and enjoying good health.  Every person and animal deserves the opportunity to have the same.

Real Weddings from Real Vendors: Melissa and Nichole

This week, New Hampshire wedding photographerMelissa Koren Photography shares her wedding with my Kate Parker Wedding!  For our blog series, Real Weddings from Real Vendors, we asked Melissa Koren about her special day with Nichole!  Melissa and Nichole were married on April 26, 2008.  Check out their wedding below and get to know Melissa and Nichole!

Top 3 Priorities:

1) THE FOOD!  We were determined that we would have fabulous wedding food.  We did a lot of research and made a lot of decisions.  We pared down our wants a lot but in the end the Sheraton Harborside did an AMAZING job.  We had a mashed potato bar, pasta station, stir fry & pot stickers and the best of all? minis.  Mini Grilled Cheese w/ Tomato soup shooter, Mini PB&J with Milk shooter, Mini Mac & Cheese ramekins and mini calzones.

We had stations all over the ballroom and the guests had to mingle about and cover a lot of ground to find what everything was, but it was a blast!

We wanted our guests to enjoy the food, not just choke down another stuffed chicken breast.  And it worked.  They still talk about how it was the best wedding food they ever ate.

2) The Date.  April 26th is Nichole’s grandparents anniversary.  It happened to fall on a Saturday in 2008 and that seemed to absolutely be the way to go.  It helped us in picking a venue location too – not available? not an option!  And being fixated with numbers I love that it ends up being 2,4,6,8 :)

3) That it was a wedding that truly reflected us and that everyone had fun in the celebration.  I think we accomplished it really well.

After our lovely ceremony at the church where I’ve worked for nearly the entirety of our relationship, officiated by the pastor, a woman who has known us since the beginning, we skipped down the aisle to the “Charlie Brown Theme” – rocked out on by the organ & cello. The reception was highlighted by the food, great music & care bear cake toppers that couldn’t have fit us better – while walking through Target we saw them in their little package and it was sort of an instantaneous “those need to be on our cake!”  We had Jenness Farm goats milk soap favors in chocolate and lilac, tied in chocolate and lilac ribbon, each with a little favor card with a fun quote about love and relationships on it.  My favorite of which is “Love is like pi – natural, irrational, and very important.”  Our wedding party was a very integral part too.  Initially we were going to just have one person each, but after a few weeks of sitting with that it didn’t feel right and we added in two more.  I can’t imagine having done it with out them.  And also Benjamin – our (then) 7 year old.  He was our ring bearer and it was so awesome to be able to have him as a part of everything!

Any Changes?:

I think I would have changed my dress.  I loved it and I worked really hard to fit into it, but in the end I just didn’t feel ‘comfortable’ in it.  I definitely wanted the color ‘pop’ but ultimately I think I should have forgone it for a more flattering style.

Also we didn’t take as much time as we should have to make the rounds and see everyone.

Overall though we worked really hard to have it be OUR wedding and all our vendors worked so well with us to make sure that happened!

Real Weddings from Real Vendors: Melissa and Nichole

What Wouldn’t you change?:

Anything else.  It was such a celebration of family and friends and love!

Our First Dance:

She; Elvis Costello

Nichole asked if she could pick the first dance and surprise me with it and I said yes.  She tried to change her mind and have me pick a few times during the process but I held fast.  It was such a great moment to look forward to!

Capturing special moments … without micro-managing

It’s ok to ask a lot of questions, but at the end of the day you are hiring a professional filmmaker because you genuinely like their work and style and have trust in their abilities. If you try to micro manage the film aspect of your wedding, the filmmaker will be more focused on getting your list of specific shots and may miss key moments that in the end, would have meant a lot more to you. Educate your filmmaker on what’s important to you but don’t overwhelm them with so many details that they can’t do their job.
