Engagement with Douglas Levy | Designing for a $25k Budget

location | Harbour Place, Portsmouth NH
photography | Douglas Levy
floral designer | Dutch Bloemen Winkel
invitations and paper | Parrott Design Studio
desserts | Cookie Creatives by Jennifer
hair and makeup | Wingate Salon
tent | Sperry Tents Seacoast

If you read the 2011 edition of Seacost Bride, then you’ll have seen that beautiful “wedding” that was designed for an overall budget of $25k, and you may be wondering how it was pulled off? Well, we’re certainly excited to share with you all of the tips and of course, more photos of both the table design and dessert table — that was absolutely scrumptious by the way!

Before we dive into the table design (and drool over the desserts) we talked with Massachusetts wedding photographer, Douglas Levy, who photographed not only this fabulous design but a truly adorable couple for engagement and bridal potraits . . . let’s take a look into engagements with Doug.

What was your inspiration behind the shoot? Things were a bit tricky, but in a fun and challenging way. On a wedding day there’s so much going on beyond the photographer’s control, often times we are making images at less than the optimal time of the day. This shoot started around 9 a.m., just as the morning light was becoming a bit unflattering.

One of the things I love the most about photographing weddings is that no two are the same, and you have to be able to react and adjust on the fly, skills that very much applied to this shoot. “What do you do with a gorgeous couple, with great hair and makeup in what most would call “bad” light?” Shoots like this really help me push how I see light and how to find the best backgrounds that the couple will look their best in.

In this case I lucked out with a really fantastic couple who were totally at ease with other and the camera. It really just came down to the 3 of us having a conversation and hanging out, and capturing that.

What determined your arrangement? I always try to position couples in nice light with nice backgrounds and then let them be themselves. There’s always going to be some posing involved, but ultimately (and in this case), the best images are the ones where the couple can be themselves, images where the reaction to seeing them is, “that’s just us.

Where did you go in Portsmouth? We just spent some time walking around the waterfront and near Strawbery Banke, shooting wherever we could find the best light and backgrounds.

Amazing, right?  Thank you to the Wingate Salon for an amazing job on hair and makeup!

Bridal Portraits with Douglas Levy | Designing for a $25K Budget

If you saw the engagement photos that Massachusetts photographer, Douglas Levy, did for this great couple then you’re going to want to see these bridal portraits as well. Not only did he capture the couple beautifully, but he included their dog Ressu in many of the shots which was beyond adorable. We asked him to once again describe his inspiration for these photos and what it was like to work with a puppy!

What was your inspiration? Everything about how I shoot is essentially me asking myself, “can I do this simpler? Are there things that don’t need to be in this image?” I often spend as much time deciding what doesn’t belong in a photograph as what does. This shoot wasn’t any different, I just tried to find clean light and clean background that helped make Hannu and Ellie look great.

What determined your arrangement — and that puppy? Including a pet pretty much throws any posing out the window. Not to sound repetitive, but it was just really a matter of finding flattering light and backgrounds, having Ressu totally removed any need for direction.

Do you have any faves? The photos of Hannu and Ellie with their dog, Ressu. At one point Hannu said, “He’s my best friend,” and it totally showed. The images with Ressu are some of my favorites from last summer.

Choosing Your Wedding Flowers | 10 Tips by Simple Bouquets

As you are thinking about your wedding, you may have every single idea in the world for your wedding floral design, or … no ideas at all.  Either way, you’re floral design should end up being fabulous and should ultimately mesh with the design of the wedding as a whole.  Whether you have a classic arrangement in mind or a totally modern arrangement in mind, there are flowers that will fit perfectly for your style.  Here are a few tips from Robin of Masssachusetts wedding floral designerSimple Bouquets to guide you through the process of choosing your wedding flowers.  To see more floral designs by Simple Bouquets, visit them on my Kate Parker Wedding.

10 Tips on Choosing Your Wedding Flowers

1. Decide what your budget is. A creative florist can work around your budget and should have your best interest in mind.

2. Think about 2 or 3 colors you love. Maybe you think they cannot be used together but share them with your florist. They may very well find a way to use them to compliment each other.

3. Think on a style. Have you always dreamed of a sophisticated wedding? A country wedding? A classic wedding? A festive wedding? Or some combination of those things. Put them in order of most important.

4. Do you have a theme in mind? Is the idea of a princess wedding appealing to you? What about a nature theme with butterflies and natural branches? Or a Zen or Asian feel?

5. Is there a flower that you cannot live without in your wedding? Does that need to be in the boutonniere, bride’s bouquet, the bridesmaid’s bouquets or centerpieces?

6. Look up bouquet styles on the web: Cascade, Hand Tied, Arm Bouquet, Single Stem.

7. Bring some photos of styles of wedding flowers you have seen and love to your floral consultation.

8. Remember that magazines and web articles often show very expensive flowers in simple designs. Your florist should be able to show you how to get a similar look and feel for much better value.

9. Remember that your florist works for you. They should be available, helpful and honest about what she can and cannot do within your budget.

10. Stick to your guns! Don’t allow any wedding vendor to push you into contracting for things you really cannot afford or will be in debt for later. Remember this is only one day and starting your new life stress free is far more important than having that additional item you probably won’t even have time to notice at your ceremony or reception.

Inspiration Board | Purple Passion

Let’s talk purple!  To be honest, growing up I was never purple-lover like practically ALL of my friends.  And until recently, I’ve started gravitating towards all things purple like bedding, shirts and accessories (ok, yes a flannel shirt — but really cute!), nail polish . . . the list could go on and on.  And when it came to wedding time (2 years ago), I would have never thought of it.  Well, here’s the perfect example of wanting to get married all over again! {ls}
