THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT – IN THEATERS APRIL 27

About the Movie
The director and writer/star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall joins the producer of Bridesmaids for THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT.  This irreverent comedy looks at what happens when an engaged couple (JASON SEGEL and EMILY BLUNT) keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle.

Exactly one year after Tom Solomon (Segel) met Violet Barnes (Blunt), he surprised her with a ring.  By all accounts, Tom and Violet are destined for their happily ever after, but career plans and comical problems manage to torpedo every “save the date.” Five years later, two people who once dreamed of the perfect day just want to get it over with.  Through the humorous trials of discovering who they will become as a couple, Tom and Violet will learn if they have what it takes to survive their five-year engagement.

Cast: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie and Rhys Ifans

Lobster Series #2: Options for Your Maine Wedding Menu

Following on How to Eat a Maine Lobster

I always suggest that every bride and groom consider the culinary traditions of the wedding location when creating a menu for their celebration. After all, providing your guests with the best experience often includes giving them a taste of the local cuisine. In our part of the country, it seems a shame to ignore the abundance of local shellfish and seafood. At the top of local delicacies list? You guessed it: lobster.

At French’s Point, we do an amazing lobster bake based on the tradition native to the Maine coastline. On our property, we have built two eleven-foot long wood-burning pits lined with stone. Inside of the pit, we boil locally harvested lobster in pots filled with saltwater and seaweed in the same way that Mainers have prepared the shellfish for more than 200 years. The lobster, infused with the flavor of the saltwater, is then served in the shell in a large buffet meal. (See the first installment of the Lobster Series for tips on how to eat a lobster in the shell.)

Cleaning your own lobster is plenty fun but it does get messy, so we usually serve this dish at less formal weddings or rehearsal dinners. For three-day weekend weddings, this lobster bake on the grounds is usually part of the itinerary at some point because it gets people talking and helps from-away folks feel like they’ve really arrived on the Rocky Coast.

If the bake is part of the ceremony, we don’t want to over-lobster people elsewhere since some guests aren’t super keen on shellfish. So we usually compliment the bake with other lighter varieties of lobster fare. We offer hors d’oeuvres like a lemon lobster roll on a mini-brioche that’s light and very summery, or lobster claw shooters, which are little shot glasses with poached lobster claws dipped in lime-infused cocktail sauce. We also offer lobster salad on Belgian endive or lobster bisque for a seated formal menu.

If a lobster entrée is desired at the celebration, a lot of couples opt for a surf and turf selection with what we call lazy-man’s lobster tails, or tails that have been taken out of the shell, paired with a cognac crème sauce. Yummy, minus all the mess.

There are also, of course, countless other ways to enjoy Maine’s chosen shellfish. The moral of the story is, there’s more than one way to eat a lobster. The moral to that moral is, pretty much every one of them is as delicious as it is quintessentially Maine.

3 characteristics to look for when you are outfitting your outdoor event!

When planning for an outdoor wedding or event it is important to remember one thing in particular…IT IS YOUR DAY!!

Tent Rental Companies can range on a vast spectrum of their level of commitment to your special day.  It is important to know what is available to you, and what to consider when looking for the right fit.

Here are 3 characteristics to look for when you are outfitting your outdoor event!

      1)   Customer Service.  You are doing much more than renting a tent and amenities for your event.  You are contracting a service.  You should receive highly professional, individualized service for your event.  From the initial phone call, the outfit you selected should be with you throughout the entire planning process.  During the event, a seasoned on-site attendant should be made available to ensure satisfaction, and help with any questions.

      2)   Efficiency.  There will be a lot of activity leading up to the event date.  Planners, florists, caterers, photographers, and other event vendors will be sharing space with the selected tent company.  Efficiency is extremely important.  An ideal tent company will arrive on time, set up the tent and custom flooring and lighting quickly and efficiently, and leave the venue as clean or cleaner than before their arrival.

      3)   Quality.  Your outdoor event should be unique and special.  A tented event, dressed with elegant lighting and décor can create a refined outdoor ambiance.  Beyond a high-quality tent, it is important to have premium lighting and flooring options.  Flooring can convert an outdoor venue into an elegant ballroom dining setting.  Creating a magical glow for an evening event, lighting can dress the tent’s interior with elegant ambiance and décor.

Defined by their elegant peaks and mast-worthy spruce poles, Sperry Tents offer refined outdoor ambiance and a uniquely nautical feel.  Sperry matches highly professional, individualized customer service with a unique and versatile product line to make every event magical.  For more information, visit http://www.sperrytentsseacoast.com/.

        Vassar College Wedding

Taken from the blog of Bruce Plotkin:

Ceremony: Vassar College Chapel (mother and brother graduated from there)
        Reception: The Grandview Poughkeepsie, NY
        Dress: Paloma Blanca
Dress Shop: The Town Shop (a local dress shop in Poughkeepsie, NY. I actually got both my prom dresses there too, which was sweet because I went to both proms with Jon-Paul too!)
Shoes: Cole Haan (with Nike Air technology so they were extra comfy!)
Flowers: Marianne’s Floral Garden Poughkeepsie, NY
        Band: Jonny Rosch and Friends
Jewelry: My mother had a special ring made for my wedding day (something new) with a pearl (something old) that belonged to my beloved Aunt Fran who passed when I was younger, set between two sapphires which is my birthstone (and something blue!).  For my something borrowed, my father gave me one of his handkerchiefs, which you captured in a great shot in our album!

A perfect day in every way, from the weather, to the ceremony in the grand and exquisite chapel on the campus of Vassar College, to the adorable couple Lauren and Jon-Paul. How better to describe this beautiful ten year long courtship than in Lauren’s own words.

“Jon-Paul and I met at my first job working at a bakery in New Paltz (near where we went for some of the engagement pics).  It was the summer before my junior year and his senior year of high school (we attended neighboring high schools).  We never thought our summer fling would lead to us marrying 10 years later!  We both attended Binghamton University and then had a long distance relationship while I was in graduate school for counseling and Jon-Paul began his career in finance in Westchester.  After I received my masters degree in school counseling, I got a job as a junior high school counselor in Westchester.  We got engaged in November of 2009 after dating for 9 years.  He planned the perfect proposal at a lookout point on the Shawangunk Mountains that overlooks all of New Paltz and Highland (our hometowns) and the beautiful fall foliage.  I was never the type of girl that had fantasized about exactly what I wanted my wedding to be, so it was fun to begin the planning.  Both my mother and one of my brothers graduated from Vassar College and I had always loved the chapel and beautiful grounds.  I took Jon-Paul to go see the chapel and he too loved it.  We booked it for our ceremony and found a wonderful officiant, Reverend Paul Mayer.  For the reception, we both loved The Grandview located overlooking the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY, where we had previously attended Jon-Paul’s best man’s wedding.  When thinking about a bridal party, we decided to have just our two closest friends as our Maid of Honor and Best Man.  Jon-Paul and I have two cousins each that are the same ages, so we asked all 4 to be flower girls and my cousin to be the ring bearer.  We are very close to our families and love our cousins, so we wanted children to be involved in the whole day. After all the planning the day had arrived and we couldn’t have asked for better weather- low 70′s and sunny. Everything came together from the flowers to the band.  The day went off without a hitch and we enjoyed every minute!”

Engagement Sessions: What are they really all about?

          /users/fcf3784d-173f-4e52-9594-b3ca85b158b7/001/001.713.528.jpg

Included in our coverage for most of the bride and grooms that we have the opportunity to work with is what we call an engagement session, also sometimes referred to as an “e” session or a “get to know you shoot.”  Many times couples come into our office with a clear vision of what these photos might entail, having seen their friends’ photos or having followed our blog or other wedding sites.  Other couples come in without a clue as to what this session is all about and in the case of some of the guys, absolutely no desire to take the time out of their busy schedules to spend an hour or two “posing” for our cameras prior to the wedding day. So I thought it might be helpful to some to hear a little bit about the real role that these photos can play in the developing relationship between the bride and groom and their photographer.

For starters, it is indeed a great opportunity for us to get to know each other better. Considering that we’re going to spend the most important day of your lives together, anything that contributes to building trust and confidence on your end and comfort and ease on mine can be nothing but positive. Our “e” sessions are always on location, often at a spot or spots that has particular meaning to the bride and groom, where they first met, their favorite place to hang, where they live.  Some of our recent shoots have taken us from the streets of New York to the Brooklyn Bridge as well as all around Boston. I love urban settings with the variety of backdrops, lighting that changes from block to block and the spontaneity that comes from our encounters with the people we meet along the way. Sometimes the shoots last for an hour, other times for several, all depending upon everyone’s schedule and desire.  My two biggest goals with our time together is to get some amazing pictures, photos most likely unlike anything that the couple has ever taken together and which clearly they’ll treasure forever as a memory of that time in their lives, and secondly to have as much fun as possible with the shoot which is a terrific ground breaker for all of us and takes away all the mystery from the picture taking process as the wedding itself approaches. Not only will we know each other better by the day of the wedding, but both the bride and groom will be considerably more relaxed in front of the camera, both of them knowing that it’s all about enjoying their special day and that I’m there just to record the action as it happens.

Finally, more and more often we’re now taking the results of our engagement sessions and designing and producing a hard-covered wedding day guest sign-in book with the best of the photos,  with magazine style spreads that include the story of the day that we’ve spent together as well as plenty of blank space for the guests to leave their greetings.  Another exciting way to preserve the memories. One of many reasons, I think you’ll agree, to include the “e” session in your wedding photography plans.
