Bridal Portraits with Douglas Levy | Designing for a $25K Budget

If you saw the engagement photos that Massachusetts photographer, Douglas Levy, did for this great couple then you’re going to want to see these bridal portraits as well. Not only did he capture the couple beautifully, but he included their dog Ressu in many of the shots which was beyond adorable. We asked him to once again describe his inspiration for these photos and what it was like to work with a puppy!

What was your inspiration? Everything about how I shoot is essentially me asking myself, “can I do this simpler? Are there things that don’t need to be in this image?” I often spend as much time deciding what doesn’t belong in a photograph as what does. This shoot wasn’t any different, I just tried to find clean light and clean background that helped make Hannu and Ellie look great.

What determined your arrangement — and that puppy? Including a pet pretty much throws any posing out the window. Not to sound repetitive, but it was just really a matter of finding flattering light and backgrounds, having Ressu totally removed any need for direction.

Do you have any faves? The photos of Hannu and Ellie with their dog, Ressu. At one point Hannu said, “He’s my best friend,” and it totally showed. The images with Ressu are some of my favorites from last summer.

Engagement Session Homework | Audra Bayette

It’s typical for couples to become quite anxious for the wedding day; putting much effort and time to make the day as close to perfect as possible.  Though, be sure to focus some time on preparations, enjoying the experience leading up to your day including your engagement session.  Thinking about skipping it?  DON’T!  It’s the perfect way to get to know your photographer and for some of us, feel comfortable in front of the camera.  Maine wedding photographer, Audra Bayette, shares some great tips and advice to get you all ready and comfortable for your engagement session.

Getting Ready for your Engagement Session Your engagement session is the first time “official” pictures are taken of you on the way to the altar.  It’s not The Big Day but putting some planning in to your engagement session will result in gorgeous images that are a true reflection of you as a couple.

When I work with couples my goal is to record your personal history – before you are married but after you have said YES!  You are an engaged couple for a short amount of time and your images should reflect that time and who you are.   So what are some things to consider when you are planning your engagement session?  I am glad you asked!

Location, Location, Location! Select a spot that is important to you as a couple.  Maybe you met at the library or you go to a local coffee shop every Sunday or you had your first kiss on top of the ferris wheel at the fair!  These are all great spots for an engagement sessions.  Selecting a location that means something to you as a couple gives your images more personality.  Shots of you and your sweetie outside your favorite ice cream shop not only provides a great background but will tug at the heartstrings each time you look at them.

But I Have Nothing To Wear! Engagement sessions are great for showing off your personal style.  Your wedding day attire is decided but your engagement session is a blank canvas!  Selecting clothing that you love and reflects who you are brings another level of personality to your images.  This is the time to bust out the clothing that makes you feel awesome and rock your wardrobe!   Plan on an outfit change during your session will give you a wider variety of looks and result in more images to choose from.  Planning on using your images for Save-the-Dates?  Wear your wedding colors – it’s a great way to work the color palette into the Save the Dates.

Makeup On The Set Please! Be the best version of yourself!  Paying a little more attention to your hair and makeup on the day of your engagement session will pay off, eyes and lips that pop helps create images that jump out to you and say WOW look at me! During the engagement session there is lots of cuddling and getting close so giving your hair a little umph that withstand the hugs and cuddles from your finance is a good idea.  Some clients schedule their makeup trial the day of their engagement session -great idea!

Bring a Prop Your dog, your bikes, your favorite books – all great props to bring along!   If you and your honey have a hobby or something you LOVE to do together schedule the session for a time you can be photographed pursuing your passion!  Don’t let the snow in Maine stop you – a snowshoeing engagement session is personal and fun!

Photographer Chat Schedule some time to chat with your photographer about your plans.  Not only can they help you brainstorm some great ideas but they can also give you a list of do’s and don’ts to make your images rock!

Have Fun! This is the most important advice I could give.  Engagement images are about you as a couple so have fun, be silly and most importantly be you!

Engagement with Douglas Levy | Designing for a $25k Budget

If you read the 2011 edition of Seacost Bride, then you’ll have seen that beautiful “wedding” that was designed for an overall budget of $25k, and you may be wondering how it was pulled off? Well, we’re certainly excited to share with you all of the tips and of course, more photos of both the table design and dessert table — that was absolutely scrumptious by the way!

Before we dive into the table design (and drool over the desserts) we talked with Massachusetts wedding photographer, Douglas Levy, who photographed not only this fabulous design but a truly adorable couple for engagement and bridal potraits . . . let’s take a look into engagements with Doug.

What was your inspiration behind the shoot? Things were a bit tricky, but in a fun and challenging way. On a wedding day there’s so much going on beyond the photographer’s control, often times we are making images at less than the optimal time of the day. This shoot started around 9 a.m., just as the morning light was becoming a bit unflattering.

One of the things I love the most about photographing weddings is that no two are the same, and you have to be able to react and adjust on the fly, skills that very much applied to this shoot. “What do you do with a gorgeous couple, with great hair and makeup in what most would call “bad” light?” Shoots like this really help me push how I see light and how to find the best backgrounds that the couple will look their best in.

In this case I lucked out with a really fantastic couple who were totally at ease with other and the camera. It really just came down to the 3 of us having a conversation and hanging out, and capturing that.

What determined your arrangement? I always try to position couples in nice light with nice backgrounds and then let them be themselves. There’s always going to be some posing involved, but ultimately (and in this case), the best images are the ones where the couple can be themselves, images where the reaction to seeing them is, “that’s just us.

Where did you go in Portsmouth? We just spent some time walking around the waterfront and near Strawbery Banke, shooting wherever we could find the best light and backgrounds.

Amazing, right?  Thank you to the Wingate Salon for an amazing job on hair and makeup!  And while we’re at it, why don’t we introduce the members of the team:

Engagement Sessions | Top 5 Picks for 2010

We’re just counting down the days until the new year and it has certainly flown by — right?  Well, we’ve been recapping some of the amazing things from the year like some truly fab engagement sessions.  Here are our top 5 engagement sessions of the year in no particular order.

Claris Photography:  When Liesl sent us this collection, we were in love.  And we were even more surprised that the purple dress worn as a contrast against the orange upholstered sofa was actually a prom dress!  see more photos

Rodeo & Co:  Of course there are many out there who cringe when snow is in the forecast…not this couple!  We love how they fully embraced the extreme at the Mount Washington Hotel.  see more photos

Pilster Photography: Such a blast and so much creativity went into this vintage-inspired session in Florida. To see more photos from their engagement session, be sure to check out Pilster Photography’s blog: part 1 | part 2

Fat Orange Cat Studio:  There’s something to be said about our autumn season here in New England.  The changing of the leaves makes for the perfect backdrop.

Kristin Spencer Photography:  Talk about backdrops!  Kristin Spencer never shies from color and neither does this couple as they playfully incorporate street art into their photos.
