an Irish Destination Wedding| Esq. Events

Massachusetts wedding planner, Jennifer Cox of Esq. Events, was a super-lucky girl to have a couple studying abroad in England wanting to get back to their Irish roots with a small intimate wedding on the west coast of Ireland.  Now, I haven’t been to Ireland but is one of my top destinations.  Yes, my last name is Sullivan — but I married into it so hopefully one day I make it!  I mean, there’s something about t exploring the country setting which seems to be like an archeological paradise.

This wedding is just so amazing with it’s intimate appeal. The couple married buy the way of a civil union, then traveled to the Dunguaire Castle for a photo op, followed by dinner and drinks at a downtown pub which of course included a Guinness or two…perhaps three…four…love it!

Wild Orchid Baking Co. | Designing for a $50k Budget

Recently, we’ve been showing you amazing photos from shoot PTW hosted at Harbour’s Place in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  And in case you missed it, be sure to check out engagement and bridal portraits by Mark Davidson and the fabulous tablescape designed by Amy Piper of Signature Events.   Ok, I LOVE this cake and it was a perfect fit to the overall design.   Erin Gardner of  Wild Orchid Baking (located in North Hampton, NH) shared with us her inspiration for the design of this cake and how couples with different budgets could make certain adjustments to this cake in order to fit it into their own wedding budget:

This is a 3-tier square cake covered in a layer of light blue fondant, designed with repeating rows of white & green fondant circles. On the green circles are tiny white sugar shells and starfish.

How did you come up with the design? I knew the other elements of the shoot were going to have similar details – squares, modern nautical, starfish, blues and greens.  So I wanted to do something that would fit into the overall feel of the wedding, but still be a piece that can stand on it’s own. I’m always very inspired by textiles and this repeating dot pattern is something you’ll find on nautical, beachy inspired handbags (I think Kate Spade did a few bags like this a few years ago).  I’m asked to do nautical cakes all the time, so I love when I’m able to do something a little different.

If a couple had a little bit more to spend on s cake, what would you do differently? Right now the cake is very clean and graphic. With a bigger budget, we could add a nice full topper of sugar flowers to match the bride’s bouquet. That would really soften the look of the cake and add a little femininity.  Or taking a step even further, we could do layers of flowers between each tier adding lots of height and drama.

If a couple wanted to cut back a little bit on their budget for a cake, how can they achieve a similar design? This cake could easily be done round, which would decrease the overall cost of the cake.  Square cakes are typically a little more expensive because they’re more time consuming for the designer. You could also just do a stripe of dots on the top and bottom tiers, with the center tier being the only one filled with circles. That would give you a very similar look, but cut back a lot on time and materials.

If this cake design was to serve let’s say 150 guests, approximately, what $ range would this design fit into? For 150 people, this would be around $900-$1,000.

Tablescape by Signature Events | Designing for a $50k Budget

Recently we showed you photos from an engagement and portrait session by Mark Davidson Photography, and have bribed you with only a sneak peek into the full table design . . . until now!  So let’s do a little recap.  We’ve asked a team of designers create a seaside tablescape as if they were designing to fit within an overall wedding budget of $50k.  While we certainly wanted to have our designers create something beyond inspirational, we also wanted to make sure the design is practical for you to achieve.  Meet the team:

      Lead Designer:  Signature Events
      Floral Designer: Embellish
      Rentals:  Be Our Guest
      Photography: Mark Davidson
      Invitations: Papier Gourmet
      Cake: Wild Orchid Baking Co.
      Tent: Sperry Tents Seacoast
Hair:  Hair that Moves, Samba Salon (Maura and Christi)
      Makeup: Joya Beauty

      {And in case you haven’t picked up a copy, 6 different designs from the photo shoot — all with a different wedding budget — were featured in the 2011 issue of Seacoast Bride}

So let’s learn more about the design itself from New Hampshire wedding planner, Amy Piper of Signature Events who did not hold back one bit as she lead the design of this seaside wonder with the help of New Hampshire floral designer, Jennifer Schmidt of Embellish.  From white-pebbled place mats to crystal flex chair love, did you ever think this something that you can actually do?!

What was your inspiration behind the design?

My initial inspiration for the “seaside” theme photo shoot was actually when I first set eyes on the white stone place mats! As soon as I saw them, I knew they would be the perfect addition to my tablescape.  The shape of the place mat dictated the use of a 5’ square table instead of using a 5’ round table.  I was looking for the white stone place mats to POP off the table linen and chose the richness of the beautiful blue color of an aquamarine dupioni.  Lime green dupioni napkins completed the look of one of my favorite color combination.

How did you spend your budget?  How did you prioritize your design list?

I wanted to create a more elegant “seaside” theme and chose to splurge on the crystal flex chairs, which added just the flair I was looking for.  I was able to tie into the tablescape color scheme by adding a matching lime green dupioni chair cushion to each chair.

Clear glass wing plates allowed the white stone place mat to be seen from all angles (I also had fun playing with the shape of this plate as there is more than one option of how it can work with the place setting!) and the aqua compote added just the right touch of color to each place setting. The rattan flatware added just a little bit of detail without being too busy for the overall look.

In addition, I wanted to be sure to incorporate a simple, yet elegant place card for each setting. The designer did a wonderful job working with my color and design theme creating not only place cards but also a table name. One area that brides often tend to scrimp on is the table names/numbers.  My advice is to always take your design concept one step further and be sure to include a stationery studio as part of your team.

What were your thoughts surrounding a floral design?

When designing my tablescape, I wanted the florist to design a centerpiece that would incorporate the colors I was already using as well as bring in a coral color. I love creating ambiance with candles and the idea of designing a 4-part centerpiece around a candelabra was the perfect addition to the design aesthetic of the tablescape. The addition of white starfish, seen as if they were tumbling down from the centerpiece completed the look.

Jennifer of Embellish shares with us her thoughts on designing the flowers:

In speaking with Amy, it was clear she was going for a clean contemporary but classic feel. She wanted the design to coordinate with her chosen color palette in typical beach glass shades of turquoise, blue, green and white. With these color choices in linens and china, I felt the best way to make the centerpiece pop was to go with flowers in orange, lime and white. Beautiful green fuji mums were combined with orange lilies and orchids, ‘limelight’ mini hydrangea and baptista pods.  I brought more of the beach in with beautiful white starfish that seemingly tumbled from the arrangement. The lush flowers surrounded a gorgeous candelabra that in this budget range could be rented.

If you had to cut down your budget, what particular items of your design would you take out?

If you had to cut down on your budget, the first thing you could replace is the Crystal Flex chairs. You could then replace them with white chivari chairs. The white chivari chairs would still tie in nicely with the white stone place mats (and even the white starfish) and the overall setting in general. If you still had budget concerns, you could even eliminate the cost of the white stone place mats. China, glassware and flatware are components that can either make or break your tablescape. Depending on your budget there are many different options available.

What do you consider to be the most striking and eye-catching element of your design?

I love not only the color combination, which is fresh and welcoming, but also the use of the crystal flex chairs.

Amy, we love crystal flex too!  Thank you to everyone who was part of this amazing design.  And yes, we will be featuring 5 more design concepts so stay tuned for plenty more!

Portraits with Mark Davidson | Designing for a $50k Budget

Last week we were excited to reveal the engagement photos from our Portsmouth photo shoot by Mark Davidson Photography and as promised…there’s more!

featured in 2011 issue of Seacoast Bride

In case you missed it, our idea behind the shoot at Harbour Place was not only to inspire but to be realistic and educate couples on what is practical within your overall wedding budget. We were honored to have 6 incredible design teams and photographers, each with a different budget design seaside-inspired table designs and coordinating personal flowers.  So just to reintroduce you, met our $50k design team!

Photo Shoot Team Details | $50k Design

        Lead Designer:  Signature Events
        Floral Designer: Embellish
        Photography: Mark Davidson
        Invitations: Papier Gourmet
        Cake: Wild Orchid Baking Co.
Hair:  Hair that Moves, Samba Salon (Maura and Christi)
        Makeup: Joya Beauty

For portraits with Mark Davidson, we headed through Portsmouth to Strawbery Banke — an amazing site for photos.  With natural landscapes, lush gardens and historical homes (oh, and Prescott Park is right across the street), certainly consider this a spot for photos should you be in the Portsmouth area for your wedding!

Tip Alert: Even though you select a spot for your photos which has amazing backdrops, be sure to listen to your photographer on the day of your wedding as the lighting just may not work.  “Portsmouth had a big role in the overall feel of the shoot.  I tried to get a Seacoast feel however I was limited to where I could go because of the lighting.  But that’s the case anytime someone picks up the camera.” **

Though the lighting was a little difficult that day (ok and it was steamy out), the photos were amazing!  Personally, the first photo below is my favorite — Mark disagrees (you’ll see his favorite in a second).  And for the personal flowers, Amy Piper of Signature Events and floral designer Jennifer Schmidt of Embellish came up with an amazing combination of orchids and dalias:

For the brides bouquet, I again chose the classic elegant and clean look of white Oriental lilies accented by orange orchids, dalias and given a sense of movement by trumpet vine. The bouquet was then collared by bold beautiful greenery and the handle was wrapped in turquoise silk and finished with pearl accent. The grooms bout was sleek and colorful – one orange dahlia accented by baptista pods and a few lily petals wrapped with white satin.

Once we strolled our way through this historical landmark, we made our way back to Harbour Place for our “reception” which was designed by Amy Piper of Signature Events.

a Mark Davidson Favorite: This is another symmetrical image and it has very natural even lighting. The couple looks relaxed here…In addition the apples on the ground are a nice touch!

So are you saying that’s it?  Of course not!  There are plenty more photos that we want to show you from underneath the Sperry Tents at Harbour Place.  And we’ll share with Amy Piper’s thoughts on the table design and the inspiration behind it.

          Snow, Please | Inspiration Board

I have been dying for snow and just as I looked out my window.  It’s snowing!  Ok, not a lot.  Probably won’t even amount to anything but I’ll take what I can get.  So I always love making something homemade to bring to my parents and friends so this year it will be a little hot chocolate in a jar (oops–I guess it’s not a surprise anymore).   Last year it was holiday-infused macaroons which are my sister’s favorite!  And I’ve decided to make snowflake marshmallows as seen on Martha Stewart to include.

          Now as most of you know, I always wanted to have a winter wedding though the golf enthusiast I’m married to cannot take the cold.  Bummer — just have to live vicariously through our work! If I had a winter wedding, I would have loved to add these snowflake marshmallows to my gourmet hot chocolate bar.  So to get into the holiday spirit even more, here’s a little snowy inspiration to enjoy!  {ls}
